Woman escapes flames
PA Wellington Mrs Fiona Brockie knows what it is like to be in the hot seat. On Monday, the 1978 Bedford van she was driving burst into flames as she waited for the lights to change on the corner of Adelaide Road and Rintoul Street in Wellington. “I just simply couldn’t believe it. I just glanced down and saw bright
orange flames leap at me from around my feet. “Within an instant they were everywhere so I jumped out and called to a policeman on the other side of the street,” said Mrs Brockie, of Upper Hutt. She was not burnt because she got out of the van so quickly. "It must have been instinct. The flames leapt at me and I was out like a shot.
“There was no point sitting in the van, that’s for sure.” The policeman and an ambulance officer who was on a job nearby spent the next few minutes putting out the fire — or so they thought. “It looked like they had put it out, then somebody yelled out, ‘you’d better move back, she’s going to blow,’ and it did all right,” Mrs Brockie said.
