Fire damages kitchen Fire severely damaged the kitchen area of a Mount Pleasant Road house yesterday afternoon. Other parts of the two-storey wooden house suffered smoke and water damage. The Fire Service was called to the property at 2.12 p.m. Firearms stolen Two firearms were among property stolen from a caravan in Bordesley Street, Linwood, on Sunday night. Both were .22 calibre. One was a semi-automatic Stirling, the other a single-shot Mosberg. Road deaths 488 The Ministry of Transport said yesterday that 488 road deaths had been reported so far this year, compared with 514 at the corresponding time last year. There had been 50 deaths so far this month, compared with 50 at the corresponding time in August last year.— PA Dead woman named The police have identified a dead woman discovered by relatives in a house in Foxton as Chee Dong Lau, aged 41. The police said there were no suspicious circumstances and they were awaiting a post-mortem examination report. The body was discovered at 1.30 a.m. on Monday. It appeared Mrs Chee had been dead for about a month and had lived alone for six months, the police said.—PA Bach burgled Property valued about $3OOO has been stolen in a burglary of a bach beside Lake Sarah, near Cass. The burglary occurred between August 13 and August 17. The intruders made off with a generator, chainsaw, fishing equipment, liquor, tools, petrol, gas cooking equipment and blankets. Union means loss Twenty trade unions had disappeared since July last year after amalgamating to meet requirements of the Labour Relations Act, said the Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger, yesterday. Under the act, unions must have at least 1000 members. From July, 1987, 13 applications for union amalgamations had been processed involving the loss of 20 unions, Mr Rodger told Parliament. — PA
