Defence

Sir,—Mark Gibson (August 19) cannot equate asking “God” to help us, via the National Anthem, and the $1.38 annual defence budget. Perhaps the adage “God helps those who help themselves,” or the saying that, “if shipwrecked, trust in God but keep rowing for the shore,” may help him with his dilemma. If there were any logic to Mr Gibson’s arguments, all we would need to do would be to change the anthem to include saving us from all violence, rape, abuse, robbery, etc., and we could dispense with our police force. It is so much easier blaming God for all our troubles than to face the reality of dealing with them, which includes the protection of society locally, nationally and internationally. — Yours, etc., R. P. DALZIEL. August 19, 1988.
