Robert Speight

Sir,—Robert Speight (18671949) was a former Professor of Geology at Canterbury College and Curator of the Canterbury Museum. As a leading geologist of his time, Speight made a significant contribution to our

understanding of the geology of Canterbury and, as an early conservationist and member of the first Arthur’s Pass National Park Board, took a keen interest in the province’s mountain lands. I am at present researching the life of Robert Speight with a view to preparing an article , for publication in this year’s edition of “The Canterbury Mountaineer,” the annual publication of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who has personal memories of Speight which they are willing to share and which will add a further dimension to the information I am gleaning from the public record and from Speight's own scientific papers. — Yours, etc., JOHN WILSON.
