Superannuation
Sir, —It seems incredible to me that there has been no voice raised in protest against the threatened demise of national superannuation from the younger members of society. How do they hope to finance their own retirement, especially if they should be made redundant in their late forties or early fifties? It has been actuarially worked out that they would need to sink 32 per cent of their pay into a private superannuation scheme to protect their standard of living and I do not think that many of them will be able to afford that in the present or foreseeable future. Where present superannuitants stand today they will find themselves frighteningly soon. The young ones should raise their voices for us, because it will be them tomorrow — or the next day. Perhaps they all intend to commit hara-kiri on their sixtieth birthdays. What a bonus for a heartless Government.—Yours, etc., EELEN PRIESTLEY. August 19, 1988.
