Lyttelton classic car race approved
Plans for a classic car race through the streets of Lyttelton have been given formal approval by the Lyttelton Borough Council.
The organisers of the race were invited to attend last evening’s council meeting after some councillors expressed concern about crowd safety and control, and liability in case of an accident. The chairman of the organising committee, Mr Bryon Porteous, said it was proposed to hold the classic car race on Christchurch Show week-end, in November.
Promoting Lyttelton was its first aim and the organisers hoped to raise enough money to buy a school bus for the Lyttelton Main School.
“We have contacted a lot of people and got a positive response. If and when we get permission for the race a meeting will be held of all these organisations,” he said.
Another member of the organising committee said that most of the classic cars were pre-19605, so they did not travel very fast and were not too noisy.
Tractor tyres and hay bales would be used to create a barrier between the circuit and spectators.
“I think it could be an exciting day for Lyttelton and it could become an annual meeting,” said Mr Porteous.
The council approved the closing of the streets to be used for the car race on November 13.
