Injured runner recovering

PA Whangarei Northland’s . national cross-country star, Gail Rear, has begun her recovery at Auckland Hospital, a spokesman says. Rear, aged 28, showed early signs of regaining consciousness on Friday, four days after suffering a fractured skull in an accident while training. On Saturday she spoke to her parents and during the week-end she was on her feet again, aided by her mother. Rear’s improvement saw her moved from the critical-care ward to the neurological intensive-care ward, where she is off life-support systems. Yesterday she was eating unaided and her condition was described as fair but stable.

A CAT scan taken last week is believed to be clear. The news of Rear’s recovery was greeted with delight at Tikipunga High School, where she is a teacher. The principal, Mrs Edna Tait, said the whole school had been devastated by the accident. “The news today is just wonderful. We have been watching Gail’s progress very carefully and we are delighted to hear of the improvement,” Mrs Tait said. Rear, Northland’s 1987 sportsperson of the year, was to have tried for a fifth consecutive title win at the national cross-country championships at Oamaru on Saturday.
