T.H.C. to reopen hotels
The Tourist Hotel Corporation will reopen the Hermitage at Mount Cook on September 15 and its Franz Josef Hotel on October 4. Both hotels were closed for the off-season last May. The corporation’s chief executive, Mr Mike Hoy, said yesterday that the
closing had been cost effective in a time of severe downturn and had been the only prudent step to take, particularly in remote locations. Mr Hoy likened tourism to farming. “The crop will be good if the weather and economic forecasts perform,” he said. “As with farming, both
elements are vital ingredients in the mix of tourism. Bookings for the coming season are strong at present, and we hope this trend will be maintained.” He said 1988 had been a year in which tourism, along with other industries, had suffered severe financial stress, but hoped it would recover next year.
