Power boat rally planned
To hold the world’s largest power boat rally — and hopefully draw more than 100 entries — is the aim of the organisers of the Shell 100 rally which is planned for October 2 on Lyttelton Harbour.
Details for the event were released by the organising committee’s chairman, Mr Ivan Ingham and promotions director, Mr Paul Larkin yesterday. Major sponsorship has been received for the event with Shell giving
more than half of what will be total sponsorship of about $25,000 by the time the rally starts. Organisers are adamant the event is a rally and not a race. In this way entries can be drawn from family boat owners. “The Shell 100 Powerboat Rally is intended to be a fun event for participants and spectators,” Mr Ingham said.
The previous world record for a power boat rally was 61 starters in a rally on Auckland Harbour earlier this year. Mr
Larkin remembers that event, saying he was awestruck seeing so many boats on the harbour at once.
Even though the event is to be held in a rally form there are several classes to enter in. The premier event will be for efficiency.
The four other classes a boat can enter are power to weight, nominated speed, production speed and open speed classes. It will be the first major power boat event Lyttelton Harbour has hosted
for several years. With all boats in a mass, rolling start from Cashin Quay it will be quite a spectacle.
The course is a diamond-type shape between Parson’s Rock buoy and a point off Rapaki Bay. To complete the 100 km rally will require 10 circuits of that course.
Boats wanting to enter must be over 3.65 m and be capable of at least 40km/h. All proceeds from the rally will go towards the Lyttelton Coast Guard.
