Welfare Dept allocated $20M
The Budget share of the Christchurch office of the Social Welfare Department this year is $20.5 million.
Up to $l5 million would be spent on the wages and administration of the 580 staff in the city and welfare area offices, said the department’s director, Mr Maurice Doocey.
Up to $5.5 million would be spent on operations. Spending on building maintenance and office accommodation would be limited because the department had received about $400,000 less than the sum expected, he said. The department’s priority would be to spend money and resources on keeping its present staffing levels, said Mr Doocey. Some of the operations money would be diverted to the payment of salaries for that reason.
Money for the reorganisation of the department into four autonomous district offices next year was not included in this year’s spending, Mr Doocey said.
