Tainui skipper fell asleep—inquiry

PA Wellington A preliminary inquiry into the loss of a fishing vessel which ran aground in Te Wae Wae Bay, Southland, in January has found that the skipper fell asleep. The Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries, said there would be no formal inquiry into the grounding and loss of the Tainui. The boat was sailing from Riverton to Whutu Anchorage on January 13, when it grounded in Te Wae ' Wae Bay about 4

a.m. The Ministry’s Marine Division report said the skipper had fallen asleep while the vessel was on automatic pilot. The two crew members managed to reach shore and were picked up later by helicopter. The Tainui subsequently broke up, the report said. Mr Jeffries said the matter had been fully investigated and there was no reason for doubt about the cause of the incident.
