Centre for sufferers
A community centre for peeople in pain will be opened by Pain Action New Zealand later this month. The centre’s secretary, Mrs Lynette Lintott, said that pain was an invisible disability and its effects could be devastating for the individual and family. “When the pain does not go away, anxiety secondary to the pain is normal, and as the months go by the pain causes anger and depression. Communication within families alters and
some collapse.” The centre, at the Cranmer Centre (the old Christchurch Girls’ High School building), would help respond to the family needs, said Mrs Lintott. It was formed in Christchurch three years ago in response to a community need for a public organisation which looked after the special needs of chronic pain sufferers, she said. Once the centre opened, it hoped to expand the range of services it offered, Mrs Lintott said.
