Emcee may find conditions to suit in Kurow Cup today

By

JEFF SCOTT

Emcee, a powerful sit-and-sprint pacer, should get circumstances to suit when the tight-class pacers resume in the $ll,OOO Aorangi Bloodstock Kurow Cup at the Oamaru Raceway today. The Kurow Trotting Club have been rewarded with a capacity field for their new CB-OC innovation in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the third leg of the T.A.B. treble and T.A.B. trifecta event, however most attention is likely to focus on runners which have drawn the inside six barriers. Last season excluded, it has been customary in recent times for the opening CB-OC invitation race of the season to develop into a sprint home, with many reinsmen attempting to give their runners as kind a run as possible. For this reason the likes of Emcee, Sossy, Rostriever Hanover and Frangelico, in particular, seem well suited today. To a lesser extent, Speedy Cheval (C 8 and Ankorman (C 9 are presented with a feasible opportunity of taking a closer step to qualifying for November’s D.B. Draught New Zealand Cup. Emcee, which has a record second to none fresh-up, showed his fitness for today’s race when timed by his Winchmore trainer John Lischner, to run 2400 m (post-to-post) in 3:1.7, with a sizzling closing 800 m of 55.7 at the Ashburton trials 12 days ago. This showing, coupled with his handy draw, is likely to earn Emcee favouritism by Sossy, which scored a double at last year’s National meeting at Addington, poses a big threat in spite of not

having a public trial in this campaign.

Trainer Richard Brosnan would not be lining up Sossy, or stablemate Frangelico, if he wasn’t satisfied with their fitness and the former’s ability to begin swiftly, then settle, also makes him suitable to this type of race, possibly more so than his stablemate. Last season’s “Four-Year-Old Pacer of the Year,” Rostriever Hanover, has shown a good level of fitness at early season trials and should be running on better than most at the finish, while Sir Alba, Speedy Cheval, Ankorman, Viewfield Prince and Skipper Dale, are others which have shown early season trial form.

The clash of the promising four-year-olds, Weltimed and Metro Boy, in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Otago Finance and Investment Pace, provide the club with a second drawcard today. Weltimed’s racing manners are improving with each outing and he looks capable of extending his winning sequence to four. Metro Boy looped the field a lap from home at Timaru last Monday and cruised home by three lengths. There seems little between them.

Million Dollar Fella, used up in the running from a second-line draw before wilting a shade to finish fifth at Timaru, could improve enough to take out the Hakataramea Pace, the first leg of the T.A.B. treble, while Le Due will be a popular fancy for the second leg. The third leg is the Aorangi Bloodstock Kurow Cup.
