Decline in building

Sir,—l always read with interest Bill Harrison’s page in Saturday’s “Press.” On August 6 a comment was made as to the total number of new houses that are being built and also a projection that there will be a decline from the present 19,000 to about 11,000. I would be interested in Mr Harrison’s source and time scale for this prediction. —

Yours, etc., J. N. WECH. August 8, 1988.

[Bill Harrison replies: “The predicted decline in house building was from figures prepared' by Dr Philip McDermott for presentation to a meeting of major home builders held at Lake Rotoiti on May 4, 1988. The time scale for this decline extends to 1991. However, Dr McDermott qualified his prediction as being subject to not only fine tuning by the Government, but also radical policy shifts. The previous low for housing was about 14,000 in 1982.”]
