Positive emphasis
Sir,—lt is presumably part of John D. Canham’s positive emphasis (August 3) to preach that: “Christians should not give equal credence or respect to contradictory religions, in the cause of global peace, because to do so is foolish, dishonest, or irrational.” I certainly give equal credence to all religions but, then again, Mr Canharn’s remarks apply exclusively to Christians. I am still mystified as to why Christians should not respect other religions in the cause of world peace. On the face of it, this appears a very reasonable, positive course of action; so, on what grounds does Mr Canham condemn it as foolish, dishonest, or irrational? I think all the great religious traditions are worthy of respect, except when they become hostile to truth, intolerant, are practised to excess or try to undermine the cause of peace.—Yours, etc., DAVID SHANKS. August 3, 1988. =ft
