Care of elderly

Sir,—The local branch of the New Zealand Private Hospitals Association has been concerned by considerable recent publicity regarding the replacement of long-stay care facilities for the elderly by the Canterbury Hospital Board. On Wednesday, August 17, we will be holding a special workshop to examine ways in which both private and public hospitals can better utilise the existing resources and facilities within the area of care of the elderly. We firmly believe in this time of economic restraint that appropriate usage of facilities in relation to bed guidelines and correct assessment procedures could mean that private hospitals could take more responsibility for long-stay and day care of the elderly, which would also result in considerable cost savings to the community. At a time when other boards around the country are moving away from long-stay care, we believe that money spent on replacing these beds locally is not the best utilisation of already available resources. — Yours, etc., W. L. PEARCE, For Canterbury branch, N.Z. Private Hospitals Association. August 10, 1988.
