B.O.P. first winner
Which team won the inaugural National Mutual national first division rugby championship in 1976? The answer might surprise some people — Bay of Plenty. The Bay, however, has never scaled such dizzy heights again, the next year it finished tenth and was demoted from the top division. Since then it has remained in the elite division, although it has finished in the bottom half more often than not. Last year it was fourth, its best placing since that marvellous victory in 1976.
