Race relations
Sir, —Varian J. Wilson’s usual perspicacity fails to focus when he views our race relations (July 22). Apparently, he sees any criticism of Maori activities as Maori-bashing yet, obviously, our indigenes are no more immune against producing ratbags than any other race. Soppy excusing of bad conduct or poor performance brings public scorn on to all and demoralises the majority of Maoris who have a genuine desire to improve their standing. Mr Wilson is concerned about colour and race always being exploited by capitalism. There are many Maoris intending to be millionaires and a few of those would like to do so on public money, if we are fools enough to allow them to do a “Marcos” on us. — Yours, etc., M. BURKE. July 22, 1988.
