Licensing laws

Sir,—With the large number of wholesale, hotel and retail wine outlets strategically placed throughout New Zealand it does appear that adequate provision exists for purchasers. Extending wine sale rights to food markets would help their owners, who do not depend on liquor sales for their existence, at the expense of existing outlet owners, who do depend on them. It is true, and is argued in favour of this extension of wine sale licensing in New Zealand, that liquor is sold in food markets overseas, but one must remember that overseas these stores are virtually the only outlets available. Hotels provide only a bar service, whilst the large wholesaleretail distributors who meet most of the New Zealand demand

simply do not exist. As the two different systems here and > overseas meet their respective demands is it then necessary to possibly double the number of wine outlets in New Zealand? One could perhaps be excused for wondering if present moves are not the result of a fair amount of lobbying behind the scenes. — Yours, etc., A. M. COOKSON. July 23, 1988.
