War could end next month
NZPA-Reuter New York The United Nations Secretary-General, Javier Perez de Cuellar, was preparing to meet the Foreign Ministers of Iran and Iraq as United Nations military experts opened talks in Teheran on plans to monitor a Gulf ceasefire.
The Secretary-General and the Security Council are working in hope of announcing a truce in the eight-year war between Iran and Iraq within 10 days, according to the council president, Paulo Nogueira-Batista, the chief delegate of Brazil.
A United Nations spokesman said the Iranian Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Velayati, was scheduled to call on Mr Perez de Cuellar today, and the secretary-general was planning to meet each side tomorrow, after the arrival of the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Tariq Aziz.
