Fishermen to discuss merger
Lyttelton and Canterbury fishermen will meet at United Fisheries today to discuss joining a new Fishing Industry Union. One of the meeting’s organisers, Mr Martin Rajnai, said Mr Frank Shirley, president of the New Zealand Fishing Industry Union, would be at the meeting to speak. Mr Rajnai said the meeting had been called on behalf of all fishermen
in the region and he expected groups ranging from Kaikoura to Timaru would attend. He said the Lyttelton and Canterbury areas had been one of the last to consider the union. He expected a range of issues to be discussed, as well as the question of union affiliation. He said there would be a vote on joining the union.
