In brief
Accident victim A 78-year-old woman involved in an accident at the intersection of Russley and Wairakei roads on Monday afternoon died in Princess Margaret Hospital early yesterday. She was Gwendoline Mary Patterson, of Papanui. She died in hospital of serious head injuries about 5.30 a.m. She was the occupant of a car which collided with another vehicle at the intersection. A man suffered minor injuries in the accident and was admitted to Christchurch Hospital. Leather stolen About $5OOO worth of leather coats were stolen from Chameleon Leather Apparel in Riccarton Road between Monday afternoon and yesterday morning. There was no sign of a break-in, the police said. Indecent assault A. woman was indecently assaulted by a half-dressed man wearing a stocking over his face about 10.15 p.m. yesterday. The woman was walking along Tuam Street, near Healing Industries Ltd, when the man approached her. He was wearing no trousers. As she walked past him he grabbed her. The woman managed to run away after the man demanded the woman perform an indecent act. The man is believed to be a Maori, of solid build. He was wearing a black jumper. Brutality ruled out The discovery by a Philpotts Road man of half a horse in his back yard garden was not a case of brutality, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says. The Mairehau man discovered the body of the horse last Thursday. But a spokeswoman for the S.P.C.A. said that most likely a large dog had found the corpse of a still bom foal and buried it in the resident’s freshly dug vegetable garden. She said there was nothing sinister about the discovery. Many horses grazed in the area. Waimate burglary The Waimate Service Station, in Waimate, was burgled last evening and had eight chainsaws and about $5OO worth of cigarettes stolen. Schoolgirl missing The police are seeking information of the whereabouts of a Shirley schoolgirl missing from home since early last week. The girl, Catherine Anne Syme, is also known as Catherine Ewan. She is European, about ,154 cm (sft lin) tall. She has short brown hair, blue eyes and a freckled complexion. She was last seen wearing a green jumper and jeans. The police hold no fears for her safety. Anyone seeing the girl is asked to contact Constable Corner at the central police station.
