Softball defence

The New Zealand men’s softball team’s defence of its world title in Saskatoon, Canada, will now involve a rather more strenuous programme than first thought. Two teams, Indonesia and the Netherlands Antilles, withdrew from the world series at a late stage and the draw has had to be revised. Instead of playing in two pools the teams will now contest a single round-robin and New Zealand will have 13 games ahead of it — some admittedly very easy — before the top four play-offs even start. The International Softball Federation world championships begin on Saturday (N.Z. time)

The draw for the New Zealand team is:— July 30 (N.Z. time) v. British Virgin Islands; July 31 v. Bahamas; August 1 v. Bermuda and Australia; August 2 v. Cuba and Canada; August 3 v. Philippines and Taiwan; August 4 v. Zimbabwe and Japan; August 5 v. Denmark and Mexico; August 6 v. United States; August 7 semifinals; August 8 grand final.
