New name approved for Hongi’s track

PA Rotorua Rotorua District councillors accepted the views of a pakeha after rejecting the same information from Ngati Pikiao people, a tribal leader said yesterday. The council has decided to support changing the name of Hongi’s track to Te Ara O Hinehopu, after receiving a letter from a Rotorua historian, Mr Don

Stafford, explaining its history and relevance to the Ngati Pikiao people. It had earlier rejected a request by the tribe to support the name change.

Mr Albie Tahana said it was interesting the council had taken the word of Mr Stafford before changing its mind about supporting the application to change the name.

It showed the council never considered the

tribe’s claims to be of any consequence, he said. However, the council had now made the correct decision.

The name change needs approval by the Geographic Board before it can be implemented. The board’s secretary, Ms Penelope Lawrence, said relevant information would be put before the board at the beginning of August.
