Tragedy in Gulf
Sir,—l believe that M. T. Moore (July 18) negates constructive criticism by making inept statements. To imply that our so-called enemy, Japan, in the last war had no intention of invading New Zealand, is tantamount to believing that now that we do not allow American warships to visit New Zealand we will be safe in the event of a nuclear war. Of course, Britain was unable.to help us during the war, but there are many graves of British servicemen in East Asia who died fighting the Japanese. It was America which saved the Pacific. America has admitted it was a mistake in shooting down the Iranian passenger aircraft, but is helping to protect the interests of many nations by its presence in the Gulf, as also are other nations’ warships. I wonder if M. T. Moore was equally as vehement when Russia shot down a passenger aircraft? — Yours, etc., MAURICE STURGESS. July 18, 1988. •
