Magna Carta

Sir, —I criticise this Government for its adherence to the principles of democracy enshrined in the Magna Carta. An agreement between an English monarch and his people more than seven centuries ago is surely of no relevance to us in New Zealand today. Why, the New Zealand Government did not exist then and Queen Elizabeth has not even one-eighth Plantagenet blood in her veins. Moreover, I am sure a translation of the Magna Carta is yet to be found that will guarantee absolute power for the monarch. —Yours, etc., DAVID HEATON. July 17, 1988.
