Popular Peters faces caucus

By (

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington Today’s planned "trial by caucus” of the National Party’s rising star, Mr Winston Peters, finds him strongly armed against any criticism by his colleagues of his foray into economic policy. The “trial” follows the very public dispute between Mr Peters and National’s spokeswoman on finance, Miss Ruth Richardson. But the latest opinion polls, particularly the June Heylen poll, show that many of the National Party faithful and the wider public support him, even if events show many of his Parliamentary colleagues do not.

If Mr Peters is criticised today, it is more likely to be for giving the Government a big stick to beat National with. It is the embarrassment he has caused rather than disagreement over what he has said which has upset his colleagues. Labour accused National of “P.C.T.” in a general debate in Parliament yesterday — “precaucus tension.” Speaker after speaker on the Government side criticised Mr Peters for "economic interventionism” and scorned the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, for failing to restrain him.
