By
BRENDON BURNS,
political reporter Another proposal from last December’s economic package is being reconsidered, a working party having been announced yesterday to consider an appropriate tax regime for charities and sports organisations. The retiring Reserve Bank chairman, Sir Spencer Russell, will chair the working party, which will oversee the establishment of a commission for voluntary welfare agencies and sports groups, to supervise the affairs of these non-profit organisa-
tions. The working party was announced yesterday in a joint statement by the Ministers of Finance, Social Welfare, and Revenue. At the same time, the task force established by charities and non-profit bodies was releasing its report, suggesting the plan to tax them would probably increase the burden on taxpayers. The commission to be established would decide the eligibility of various organisations for charity status, Task force report, page 4
