New Korean Consul
The new Honorary Consul to South Koirea in New Zealand, Mr Clyde Sugden, is no stranger to the country and its people. Mr Sugden, a Christchurch accountant, who has visited Korea twice, will as honorary consul represent the interests of South Korea and its people, and promote exchanges with New Zealand. He succeeds Mr A. R. Guthrey, who served
two terms as consul. “Korea is an extremely interesting country,” Mr Sugden said. “The people are extremely dedicated in their approach to work and in their attitude to make Korea a dominant force in the industrial market.” His contact with South Korea began in 1977, when he became accountant and finanical adviser to Mr Seong Bang Lee and his
family, who were in business in New Zealand processing deer byproducts and squid fishing in joint ventures with South Korean fishing companies. In 1982 Mr Sugden and Mrs Sugden visited Korea and were shown some of the countryside by Mr Lee’s eldest son. They returned in 1985 with Rotarians. Mr Sugden is a foundation member of
the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games Fund Support Society. He is president of the Christchurch Citizens’ Association and recently retired as a member of the Christchurch Transport Board. He has practised as a chartered accountant for 35 years. He can be reached at the accountancy firm of Price Waterhouse in Christchurch, where he is now a consultant.
