Refugee on sex charge

PA Hamilton A refugee has admitted sexually violating a child of his sponsors. He was brought to the High Court at Hamilton for sentence where his name, nationality, occupation and town of residence were suppressed to protect the identity of the girl. Mr Justice Anderson sentenced the man, aged 39, to years jail on a count of sexual violation. The Court was told the man was a refugee who came to New Zealand in 1980 and had since bought a section and built a house.

During the earlier part of his time in New Zealand he lived with his sponsors where he admitted indecently assaulting the girl when she was six and sexually violating her two years later.

The violations occurred regularly over a period of several months. References, termed as “glowing,” were submitted by his employer, the pastor of his church and an organisation dealing with immigration and refugee settlement.
