Campaign will promote employment for disabled

Employment for the disabled will be promoted in a campaign by the Disabled Persons Assembly in October. The project manager, Mr Sam Jamieson, said the campaign would be aimed at both the disabled and employers. In the light of rising employment and largescale redundancies, some people might think the time was inappropriate, but the campaign was still justified, he said. Even with high unemployment, many people

were moving in and out of the paid workforce, generating vacancies. It was import that people with disabilities had access to these vacancies, said Mr Jamieson. The main barriers faced by those seeking employment, whether disabled or not, were those relating to work skills, work experience, location, information and job-seek-ing skills. The employment week campaign for the disabled, which would be held from October 4 to 10,

would present the disabled to the community in positive and encouraging ways.

The employment week project had received $75,000 funding from the Minister of Employment, Mr Goff, as well as $11,700 from the shop welfare account fund of the Rehabilitation League. In preparation for the employment week, a seminar will be held in Christchurch on August 5 and 6 to decide what would happen in the city,
