Insurance to indemnify nurses
PA Wellington The Nurses Union says it has taken out a comprehensive indemnity insurance policy to protect members against professional negligence and public liability claims. The policy protects union members 24 hours a day while acting as a nurse, on or off duty, and applies to any claim against a nurse for any error or negligence leading to injury or death or damage. Coroners’ inquiries and exemplary damages claims are covered and the public liability cover protects nurses for damage to property during the course of their work. Members of the union
are also covered for disciplinary and similar proceedings, such as legal representation at the nursing council. The union, in its latest newsletter, says this aspect is a first for New Zealand nurses.
“It is imperative that any nurse who faces disciplinary action by the Nursing Council has this representation. Her/his livelihood, credibility and professional status is at stake and such representation of members is fundamental to any union,” it said. Each nurse is protected for up to $200,000 a claim with a maximum of $400,000 a . year. Legal expenses are also paid.
