Swallowing heroin admitted
PA Auckland A company director, aged 31, yesterday admitted swallowing a condom containing $lO,OOO worth of heroin in an attempt to smuggle it through customs. In the District Court at Auckland, Paul Leonard King, of Blockhouse Bay, admitted a charge of importing a Class A drug. The police prosecutor, Detective Sergeant John
Flanagan, told the Court King arrived at Auckland Airport on a flight from Sydney at 7.15 p.m. on January 5. He was seen acting suspiciously by customs officers who searched his luggage and found part of a condom in the pocket of a pair of trousers. When questioned, he admitted he had swallowed the condom which contained 9.2 grams of 36 per cent pure heroin, with a street value of $lO,OOO. Defence counsel, Mr Chris Harder, told Judge Paul that King had been an addict for 17 years and was at present undergoing a successful course of treatment. The Judge remanded King on bail to the High Court for sentence on August 15.
