Casino group in recess
Christchurch’s casino sub-committee is in recess until the Government’s Committee of Inquiry on casinos makes its report.
The sub-committee’s chairman and champion of a casino for Christchurch, Cr Ron Wright, argued strongly that the sub-committee be allowed to complete its task of investigating a casino for
Christchurch. But his fellow councillors did not see the need for a council inquiry paralleling the national investigation.
Cr John Burn said that the sub-committee could be reactivated once the Government committee made its report. The council could then decide its stance on a casino for Christchurch and put its case to the Government.
Cr Wright accused him of scuttling the sub-com-mittee because of his own views on casinos. The group should be allowed to hear from the supporters as well as the opponents of casinos who were heard at its last meeting. Councillors voted by 11 votes to four to put the sub-committee into recess.
