Iran accepts cease-fire
NZPA-Reuter Nicosia Iran said yesterday it accepted a United Nations Security Council resolution ordering a ceasefire in the IranIraq war, the Iranian newsagency I.R.N.A. reported. I.R.N.A M monitored in Cyprus, said Iran informed the United Nations Secretary General, Mr Javier Perez de Cuellar, in a message that it accepted resolution 598 passed on July 20, 1987, “in the interest of security on the basis of justice.” The surprise announcement came as
the Security Council was due to meet today to resume its debate on Iran’s complaint against the United States over the-shooting down of an Iran Air airbus over the Gulf on July 3 killing all 290 people on board. Iran had refused to accept the resolution passed unanimously, insisting that an investigation of the origin of the war in 1980 and condemnation of the aggressor should precede a ceasefire. Iraq has said it would abide by the resolution if Iran did the same.
