Cup decision soon
By
The Southland Racing Club will decide shortly whether or not the 1989 Invercargill Gold Cup will be run on the Ascot Park course at Invercargill or not in the new season. Ascot Park is undergoing major reconstruction and will be closed from late spring until after the summer meeting held in January. The club has arranged to use the Riverton course for the summer meeting but this does not yet mean the cup will be run at that meeting. “We have quite a bit to discuss before a final de-
cision is made,” said Tom Hogan the club president. “We are also not certain about sponsorship at this stage. It could be that the race is transferred to another of our meetings.” The Invercargill Gold Cup was sponsored this season by Challenge Meats whose position may change with recent activity in the meat industry. The Wairio club is also looking for a new venue for its December meeting and a decision is likely today or tomorrow.
There has been some suggestion the meeting could be held outside Southland though that is not certain at this stage.
