Redcliffs win hurts Harewood

A deserved 4-1 win by Redcliffs against Harewood in the premier men’s hockey championship last Wednesday evening, at Porritt Park, has left Harewood with the prospect of finishing third in the championship when, two weeks ago, it had a distinct chance of retaining its title. Harewood dominated the first 10 minutes against Redcliffs, but failed to score. Slowly Redcliffs gained some parity and by half-time was two goals ahead through pen-alty-corners struck by Ben Herbert. Richard Schoeman scored two typically spectacular goals in the second half to take Redcliffs to a 4-0 lead which Harewood did not look like hauling back although Ross Thomson scored a consolation goal late in the game. Harewood was without the services of David Penfold and Chris Leslie, who are in Australia with the New Zealand team, and Andy Innes who is injured. Redcliffs was without Mark Gowans and Brent Stanley. Balvant Bhana was called in from retirement to bolster the Harewood attack, but after the first 10 minutes he and Grant Edwards could make little impression on the right flank. Redcliffs maintained its policy of passing the ball to place pressure on the Harewood defence and the tactic worked admirably. Harewood’s players by contrast dribbled too far too frequently and largely ignored the importance of passing.
