Tie Great Crafty Ideas Book'

“The Great Crafty Ideas Book,” by Barbara Telfer (Ashton Scholastic), is full of them. From how to do this to how to do that. And then some more. From Clarence the Cat (from crafty household ideas for the bathroom) to Robot Man (crafty playthings) and then to Lolly Tree (Crafty Christmas Ideas — these are but a few of the crafty contents to be made, using this excellent book as a guide. Most of the ideas are very simple, too. Napkin rings, for example (illustrated on your left), are made with a cardboard roll (use the inner of toilet paper rolls or hand towel rolls) and

other simple bits and pieces like rulers, pencils, scissors, pieces of coloured felt, coloured ribbon and glue. The method for “what to do” (in this crafty case) is first, using a pencil and ruler, measure a line four centimetres from each end of the cardboard tube. Cut around these two lines with the scissors. Throw away the centre piece of the tube, keeping the two ends to make two napkin rings. You will need one piece of felt and one length of ribbon for each ring. Now, apply glue around each end of the tube, about four millimetres

from the edge. Place the tube in the centre of a piece of felt. Carefully roll the felt around the card and hold firmly until the glue is stuck firm (use a rubber band if your hands get tired!) Then, paste glue to the underside of a length of ribbon. Use this to cover the felt join, leaving about three centimetres of ribbon at each end of the tube. Fold the ends of the ribbon and glue neatly under the inside of the ring. Now you have napkin rings. These can be made now — Christmas is a while away yet, but there is nothing like being prepared!
