MANILA BY THE WAYSIDE
Photographs and text by LES BLOXHAM
Visitors to Manila cannot help but stumble across sad sights and rare sights like those shown above and at left. They are very much a part of life in this sprawling city of eight million people, 80 per cent of whom live below the poverty line. The calf (above) was being barbecued on the footpath outside a cheap restaurant in the red-light district of Ermita. At left, a beggar and her child sleep on a footpath alongside a plastic cup optimistically positioned for coins. The city has an estimated 100,000 beggars, some of whom work for wealthy syndicates. For visitors, to give or not to give can be a difficult decision to make. In this instance, however, my wife was in no doubt and we left the woman with food and drink.
