Junior men’s team named

Auckland and Canterbury players dominate the New Zealand junior men’s hockey team to play in a Junior World Cup qualifying tournament in Brisbane from November 20 to 27.

Each province supplies six players to the team which will meet Australia, Fiji and Western Samoa in a double round robin tournament to decide the Oceania representative in the Junior World Cup finals.

The junior team of 16 was named after a squad of 21 played against the New Zealand senior team in three matches in Wellington at the week-end. Anthony Thornton from Auckland is the captain of the team which will be coached by the former New Zealand representative and an Olympic gold medallist in 1976, Arthur Parkin of Auckland. Another former New Zealand representative who retired from inter-

national hockey only last year, Graeme Sligo of Gisborne, is the team manager. The New Zealand Hockey Association has continued its policy of appointing officials to the team who have recently finished their international careers. Selwyn and Barry Maister, of Christchurch, previously shared the coaching and managerial duties. The team for the tournament is: — Goalkeepers: Scott Anderson (Canterbury): Hilton Munro (Manawatu). Fullbacks: Grant Rumble (Auckland): Scott Hobson (Canterbury); Stephen Shepherd (Northland). Halfbacks: Lloyd Hawthorn, Anthony Thornton (captain, Auckland); Mark Gowans (Canterbury). Forwards: Grant Edwards, Guy Edlin, Craig Mcßobb (Canterbury): Nigel Naim, Graig Russ, Greg Russ (Auckland): Shane McLeod (Waikato); Stuart Sutherland (Manawatu). Physiotherapist: Richard Hopkins (Canterbury).
