Celebration of recorder music

A recorder over 2m long will feature in a celebration of recorder music in Christchurch on Sunday. The Christchurch Youth Recorder Ensemble, conducted by Neville Forsythe, will perform a special concert, “A Festival of Recorders”, in the Great Hall of the Arts Centre at 3 p.m. This will be the final concert of the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music’s Winter Series. The concert is being held to celebrate the latest addition to the recorder ensemble, a Sub Kontra bass recorder. This is the largest instrument of the recorder family, more than 2m in length. purchased recently from West Germany for $3124. The C.S.I.M. Recorder School raised the funds to buy the instrument, which is rare in New Zealand. The recorder school has decided to dedicate the Sub Kontra bass to Mr Rolf Just in recognition of his contribution to recorder music in Christchurch over the last 30 years. During the concert the group will also play the March of the Priests from “The Magic Flute”, by Mozart, a canzona for two four part choirs, the “Sonata la Leona”, which was composed in 1608 by Cesario Gussago, and an arrangement from the first movement of Handel’s “Water Music.” A Renaissance Dance Band, directed by Keith Sayers, playing authentic instruments including crummhorns, recorders, a dulcian and pommer will also feature in the programme. It will accompany dancers from Linwood High School, performing dances from the court of Henry VIII.
