I went into the bantams’ house

By

SARAH VAN-LENT

Aged 5 years

When our neighbours, Colleen and Robin, went on holiday to Moeraki, our family had to look after their pet bantams, called Bonnie and Clyde, and the baby chick, called Henny Penny. Colleen gave us chicken seeds and silverbeet to give them. Mummy didn’t know how to put in the grain and silverbeet because of wire all around them and only a small door. I told Mummy, “I’ll go inside.” So we opened the door and I squeezed in and collected up some eggs. Then I threw the seeds to them and changed the water. Bonnie and Clyde were squawking loudly because they were scared.

When Colleen and Robin arrived home I got a big caramello chocolate bar for being a good Bantam looker-after.
