Sale of alcohol

Sir,—The Laking report on alcohol and licensing laws raises some contentious issues. The suggestion that the minimum drinking age be lowered from 20 to 18 would be a retrograde step. To submit that this change will only legalise the status quo is to look at the problem in a superficial way. There are problems of violence, crime and a high incidence of fatal road accidents associated with young people drinking. At present 18-year-olds drink because they can pass for 20. Lower the age to 18 and some 15 or 16-year-olds will be getting crapulous in pubs and driving with alcohol-induced bravado. For many of them drinking is a social ritual that helps them achieve acceptance by their peers. It will be fine to lower the drinking age only when our community is educated to drink responsibly—Yours, etc.,
