Floral festival must take chance
The Christchurch Floral Festival will have to put its name in the grants hat with other bodies, the Christchurch City Council’s policy and finance committee decided yesterday.
The festival committee had sought a $10,300 grant from the council’s festivals allocation in the budget.
That sum came from a $900.0 estimate for a big festival for 1990 and a $l3OO deficit estimated on a small festival for next year.
The council allocated $25,000 for a festival or festivals in its budget as well as the $lOO,OOO set aside to fund a Christchurch Arts Festival grant. Councillors felt yesterday that the festival committee’s application should be considered by the council’s grants committee along with other applications.
Computer loan
A $1.3 million loan was approved to buy a new treasury computer system. Funding the AS/400 computer, supplied by IBM, and the software from Stowe Computing, Ltd, of Australia, by loan would spread the cash outlay over the life of the equipment, said the City Treasurer, Mr Robert Lineham. The council set aside $300,000 in this year’s budget towards the computer. That could be used to buy the software and the balance put towards the rest of the system, Mr Lineham suggested. That would mean a loan of $1.3 million over two years would be necessary. The whole system will cost $1,487,361. Polytechnic council
Christchurch City’s pre-
sent representative on the Christchurch Polytechnic Council will face an election to retain his seat.
A change to the council’s constitution replaces the representative from the City Council with one representing the City, the Heathcote County Council, the Riccarton Borough Council and the Waimairi District Council.
The Riccarton council has decided to nominate Cr Derek Anderson for the position, which means the City’s Cr Clive Cotton will face at least one challenge to his seat. Heathcote and Waimairi have yet to decide who or if they will nominate.
Cr Cotton was endorsed by the committee as a candidate.
The Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, will exercise the council’s vote in the election.
