20,000 salmon to be released in Coleridge

By

RICHARD CRESSWELL,

fishing reporter

About 20,000 salmon will be released into a stream feeding Lake Coleridge tomorrow and Thursday by MAFish officials.

The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society and MAFish have combined to truck the fish, up to one year old, from the Ministry’s Glenariffe research station in the headwaters of the Rakaia River to Coleridge.

A MAFish technical officer, Mr Ron Dougherty, said the Coleridge release into the lake would be the biggest to date.

He said there w’ould be 5000 tagged fish and 15,000 untagged, all weighing about 80g.

The effort has been partly funded by Electricorp and will give MAFish valuable information about population numbers in the lake. “The lake is landlocked and it needs restocking,” he said.

MAFish is also warning salmon fishermen in the area to handle the young fish carefully. “Our biggest worry is that the bulk of the salmon are undersize and should be returned to the water with care.”

He said it was hoped the release would be an annual event.
