Arthur Ellis and Company’s head office will move to Christchurch from Dunedin, bringing more jobs to the Canterbury region, said a Christchurch division company spokesman yesterday. Arthur Ellis employs 110 people in Christchurch at sites soon to be united under one roof.

The managing director of Arthur Ellis, Mr Keith Tyrrell, said 51 staff would lose their jobs in Dunedin. The Dunedin business will close on August 19 and the head office will move to Christchurch in October. The .Christchurch spokesman said the factory redevelopment in the city and the move from Dunedin would create more jobs. He could not say how many.

Redundant Dunedin workers would have “first right” to new positions in Christchurch. Arthur Ellis was founded in Dunedin more than 100 years ago. The spokesman said the dhristchurch business was doing well in sports goods and outdoor equipment such as sleeping bags, tents and packs.
