Southern League soccer
With five rounds left in the Division Two Southern League soccer competition, five teams still have a chance of winning a place in the play-offs for promotion to the Division One travelling league. New Brighton, coached by Harry McCosh, has a fourpoint lead over Shamrock, with Woolston W.M.C. and
Halswell one point further back in equal third place. University of Canterbury is fifth, nine points behind New Brighton, and needs a remarkable run of results to win the competition. Brighton plays Cashmere, Woolston, Rangiora, Halswell and Nomads in its remaining matches. Standings:
