Brown 1). Player of the tournament: Kurt Goldsworthy (Auckland Grammar School). After dominating the two earlier matches, the Australian schoolboys’ water polo team had to produce a dramatic shot in the dying seconds to draw the final game 11-all with a strong President’s team in Dunedin on Sunday evening. Despite arriving in New Zealand without its captain and top player, Daniel Marsden, the Australian side has performed well in its build up to a three-match test series against the New Zealand schoolboys* side this week. It overwhelmed a Canterbury schoolboys’ team 14-5 before travelling to Dunedin for its main build up to the test series which begins on July 14, in Auckland.

It won its first matches in Dunedin’s Moana Pool 16-12, and 18-7. The only drawback to the team’s preparation has been the shallow depth of Moana Pool. It does not meet international requirements. - TRIATHLON Results of the New Zealand secondary schools triathlon championships in Hamilton on Sunday: Senior boys: Simon Teagle (Long Bay College), 1.03:26, 1; Vaughan Johnson (Kaiapoi), 1.05:18, 2; Sean Jarman (Otumoetai), 1.05:58, 3. BASKETBALL The Soviet Union assured itself victory and a ticket to the Seoul Olympics by crushing Spain 129-82 in the sixth round of the European men’s Olympic qualifying tournament on Saturday. Italy, meanwhile, jeopardised its chances of reaching Seoul when it was beaten 9188 by European champions Greece. It must now beat the Soviet Union in its final match on Sunday, and hope Yugoslavia account for Spain. With the loss, Italy dropped to third equal with Spain in the eight-nation competition. Yugoslavia, who beat France 104-81, lies second. The top three qualify for Seoul. The Soviet Union maintained its unbeaten record with panache, scoring 53 baskets in 70 attempts. It was untroubled by Spanish tactics to force the pace, played with deadly precision and opened up an unbridgeable lead early in the match. It led 65-41 at half-time.
