AUSTRALIA BHP leads surge

NZPA-AAP Sydney Strong demand for quality stocks, particularly from overseas buyers yesterday, sent the Australian sharemarket surging to a postcrash high at the close. Market leader, BHP, led the rise, with entrepreneurial stocks, resources and retailers also finding good support, brokers said. “The market was very strong today although volumes weren’t that high,” a broker said. "Offshore buyers are obviously taking a positive view of Australia." By the close of floor trading, the all ordinaries index was up 15.8 points at 1628.4. It had earlier reached 1628.9, the level at which it had closed on October 22. The all industrials was up 17.1 points at 2579.1, the best since October 19. BHP was actively traded with keen demand from both local and overseas buyers. It closed up 30c at the day’s high of 846 on turnover of 2.66 million shares. Its rise followed reports that 50 to 60 million shares held by Bell Resources were to be bought up by an international con-

sortium.
