Defence spending ‘excessive’

PA Wellington

The member of Parliament for Island Bay, Ms Liz Tennet, yesterday attacked the level of the Government’s defence expenditure, saying the money should instead go to education, health, child care and social spending. Ms Tennet told a group of petitioners on the steps of Parliament that spending around $2 biliion on four new frigates was “not acceptable.”

“And the fact that six Ortons updated for submarine hunting is going to cost something like $7O million, I think is excessive expenditure,” Ms Tennet said.

“I, personally, would much rather see that money go on education, health and child care and all those other (social) issues.”

The Anti Bases Campaign presented her with a petition opposing the proposed satellite tracking station in the Waihopai Valley near Blenheim. The petition said the station would contravene both domestic and international law and would make it easier to invade the privacy of communication in the Pacific and would worsen New Zealand’s relations with them.
